A realistic character is like a real human being, and the reader should feel that.
The reader should be able to identify not only with the protagonist. He should also be able to identify with the antagonist as well as a minor character or two as soon as he meets them.
It’s a matter of grounding the reader in the story.
The more quickly the reader identifies with the character, the more quickly he will become engaged in the story line.
This doesn’t have to happen by accident.
You can assign your characters real-life character traits.
