StoneThread Publishing Royalties & Pricing

Note: These are only examples of royalties and pricing, intended to give prospective StoneThread Publishing authors a sense of how their books will be sold and how the authors will be paid. The exact numbers in any of these royalty models will pertain to any particular ebook only by coincidence.

Examples of Royalties

Ebooks sold through Amazon earn a 70% royalty for sales in some venues and 35% for sales in other venues. Of that payment, the author receives 80% and we receive 20%.

• Example 1: If your ebook is priced at $9.99, for each copy sold in the USA or Canada, the payment will be $6.99. Of that, you will receive 80% ($5.59) and we will receive 20% ($1.40).
• Example 2: If your ebook is priced at $9.99, for each copy sold in a venue that pays only 35% royalty (some European countries, who also take a VAC tax), the payment will be $3.49. Of that, you will receive 80% ($2.79) and StoneThread will receive 20% ($0.70).

Ebooks sold through Smashwords receive a different royalty rate depending on the cover price.

• Example 1: If your ebook is priced at $9.99, non-affiliate sales (those copies sold directly through the Smashwords online bookstore) earn an 80% royalty. For each copy sold the payment will be $7.99. Of that, you will receive 80% ($6.39) and StoneThread will receive 20% ($1.60).
• Example 2: Books priced at $9.99 and sold through a Smashwords affiliate (B&N, Apple, Kobo, Sony, Diesel) earn 66% royalty. For each copy sold the payment will be $6.59. Of that, you will receive 80% ($5.27) and StoneThread will receive 20% ($1.32).
• Example 3: If your ebook is priced at $4.99, non-affiliate sales (those copies sold directly through the Smashwords online bookstore) earn 78% royalty. For each copy sold the payment will be $3.89. Of that, you will receive 80% ($3.11) and StoneThread will receive 20% ($0.78). Books priced at $4.99 and sold through a Smashwords affiliate (B&N, Apple, ) earn 64% royalty. For each copy sold the payment will be $3.19. Of that, you will receive 80% ($2.55) and StoneThread will receive 20% ($0.64).

Note: As you can see from the examples above, the royalty rate varies slightly depending on the cover price of the book. Also, from time to time the various vendors might change their rates. We will always pay you 80% of whatever royalty we receive, and our records will always be open to your scrutiny.

Examples of Pricing

• Fiction or Creative Nonfiction 20,000 to 39,999 words: $1.99 to $3.99
• Fiction, Creative Nonfiction or Memoir 40,000+ words: $2.99 to $4.99
• Didactic, Self-Help and Informative Nonfiction, any length: Discuss with the author
• Short Story Collections 5 to 9 titles: $1.99 to $2.99
• Short Story Collections 10+ titles: $2.99 to $4.99
